RIP Will Elder, the Guardian vs. Edward Said

May 24th, 2008 by Menachem Wecker

  • [JTA] Will Elder (a.k.a. Wolf William Eisenberg), “the Mad Magazine artist who helped introduce Yiddishisms and Borscht Belt humor into the American lexicon,” died at 86 on May 15. His self-portrait, via Wikipedia, is to the right.
  • [Forward] Here’s the quick guide to the art stories: Karine Cohen-Dicker on Israeli film director Ari Folman’s antiwar animated take on the U.S. war with Lebanon here, a great interview by Rebecca Honig Friedman on if Shakespeare was a Jewish woman here (incidentally, RHF is getting slammed on the comments), and Marissa Brostoff on Jewish windows the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of NY allegedly stole here
  • [Guardian] Jonathan Jones pan’s Edward Said’s book on Orientalism: “I think Orientalism is more than just a bad book. It is a bad book that legitimates bad politics. It is a great wedge of dishonesty that has begat a great mountain of ignorance. It is a treason of the clerks, an intellectual fraud that justifies bigotry and hatred.”
  • [American Artist] Daniel Grant writes informatively on the “Christian Art Market” and what is selling.
  • (Above) From the Santa Barbara Independent’s coverage of “I Madonnari, a three-day festival that brings approximately 400 artists to the plaza in front of the mission to create more than 200 artworks out of pastel chalk, preparation, and hard work.” More info here.
