Richard Serra on the Charlie Rose Show

June 6th, 2007 by Menachem Wecker

Serra, a Jewish sculptor, talked to Rose last night about a number of things, including a discussion about interior vs. exterior space in his works, and how they work better inside (where the exterior space grounds them), rather than outside in a field where they’d get lost. A 40 year retrospective of Serra’s work is at MoMA.

The video is not yet up, but above is a previous interview with Serra on 9/11 (he says he’s worked harder since) and memory (it is personel, “collective memory I have a problem with … because it always rings untrue to me,” because it is usually written by those who succeed).

Here’s another interview from 2001.

(Update June 6) Here is the most recent clip:

Serra is part of MoMA’s Richard Serra: Sculpture: Forty Years show, and is Jewish, as I pointed out here. In the cavernous forms, there might be a discussion to be had about any number of religious issues (Jonah in the whale, the passageways through the Red Sea, birth/rebirth and the womb). I will post more on this when I’ve done some more research and thinking. […]
